Why are some Americans against learning Spanish?

I’ve heard Obama says that Americans should make sure their children are speaking Spanish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZprtPat1Vk
Yet there seems there seems to be objection to this from some Americans?
Surely it can only be beneficial to know another language?! I would be thrilled if here in the UK we were told everyone should speak French (although most people learn it at school, only some carry it on). It would be exciting!
I think it’s so sad the dominance that English has in the world today, because the diversity of languages is just so refreshing.
Why do you think some Americans are against Spanish? I recognise that not all are, of course. Please forgive me if I’m being slightly ignorant about the situation, but please enlighten me.

i want my child to be bilingual i am english and can speak fluent spanish i want my baby to learn to speak spanish as well whats the best way to do it.
Should i speak to him ina mixture of both or will this confuse him

i dont usually speak spanish because no one i no or see often can speak it but if the dad spoke in english and i spoke in spanish sometimes but also in english would it still be effective

The languages dont compliment each other very well. If I spoke languages dutch as English and German… I would learn dutch etc…
